“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao-tzu
This famous quote tells it all. No matter whether it is a physical journey or life journey…you need to take the first step. You look at your life and see you are on that hamster wheel to nowhere. You get up, get ready for work, go to work, work, go home, eat, watch tv (or get sucked into the black hole of social media or other distraction), go to bed…then wash, rinse and repeat. Days trudge by, nothing changes, you just go by existing and not being who or what you want to be because “life get in the way”.
Most people don’t know what they want to be when they grow up and that is even after they grow up. They just take what is given to them. They look for some job and think that is all I need to get by. They don’t even think of going towards their passion…many don’t think they have a passion! They are blind to what they love and just continue to exist.
Look at successful people – and I don’t mean just wealthy people – that will come with passion – I mean people with a passion. One of my favorite people who lived and I mean lived his passion was the late Steve Irwin – the Crocodile Hunter! I loved this guy. He lived life his way doing his passion and that was taking care of wildlife and educating people to the wonders of nature. I have never seen anyone so into what he does. He started small and I am sure that would have been enough for him. But he took that first step, he went in the direction of his passion. Even when he was famous and had tons of success his main interest was always nature and wildlife. He also loved people and that showed in how he interacted with them and created bonds that still exist. I never met him but would have been honored to. He made an impression on me that will last a lifetime.
That is what I call passion. You don’t have to be as outgoing or high energy as Steve but you should care the same way about what you love. Take that first step and find your passion. That is the fist step in becoming who you want to be. You don’t have to settle for mediocrity. Just don’t do it. You are better than that even if you don’t think so. We are all the same in the beginning. We come into this world with nothing and begin from there. That happens later in life as well for most. They act like they are babies and just want to have things handed to them and don’t go for the best in life. They just exist and don’t really live.
I you want more than just existing then you have to take that first step. Discover your real self and your passion. It doesn’t make any difference what it is. We are all different so are our passions. Some love gardening. They have perfect flowers and vegetable gardens. They love working with the earth and growing things. This is their way of expression. They can make their gardening their life. They could grow flowers to sell. They could grow vegetables for sale. They could teach people how to garden. They could open a gardening center. They could write books on gardening or create how to guides. You get the idea. They take their passion and learn how to create a life and livelihood around it. Finding that passion is taking the first step.
How to find your passion? I can’t go into everything on how to find your passion. There are books written on it. I can give you a few ideas on how to narrow it down:
1. Make a list of 50 things you like to do.
2. Take that list and label them “A”, “B” or “C” with “A” being most favorite and wouldn’t want to live without it or would do for free.
3. Get rid of anything that is not an “A”
4. Now do the same thing with the list of “As”. Narrow it down to your top ten.
5. Now put those top ten in the order of most to least favorite (this may be tough)
6. Now you have a list of passions to pick from!
You just took the first step. Keep those feet moving (figuratively or physically) towards your passion. It is now up to you to fashion the life you want around that passion. Think of all the ways that you can have that passion in your life. Think of how you can make a living from it. This isn’t as critical in the first steps because doing or working on your passion will give your energy to the universe and things will pop up or a direction will become apparent. Don’t worry about the how at this point – just move in the direction of your passion.
Take that first step and begin your journey. Be yourself and work on your dreams – not the dreams of others. There are plenty out there that will just exist and make others dreams come true by spending their life energy just working. Don’t be one of them.
